DAY 9:
Welcome to Recife! Watch out for sharks!!
Our color coordination was unintentional. Our first night in Recife, we went out to eat with our host Everson, his sister, and some of their friends. We ordered our food and then crossed the street to go for a walk along the beach while we waited for it.
Here is our dinner. It looked really cool and tasted ok.
After dinner we all went to the city of Olinda. It was very beautiful and old. I think it was the original settlement in the area. We climbed some killer hills.
We saw several of these dolls that they use during carnival. They were creepy.
Just Pete being Pete.
Us at the top of the biggest hill.
A distant view of downtown Recife.
Yeah... creepy.
DAY 10:
The next day we went to church like good boys and girl. After church we visited the old city of Recife. It was a lot like Olinda but flat and by the water.
Austin thinking about going back to church.
Pete standing on Marco Zero. Apparently it is the reference point for all municipal measurements in Recife.
The buildings were very beautiful here as well.
After seeing the old city we split up. Austin and Jared went to visit an old mission companion of Austin's and Pete and I visited a family he knew during his mission.
We met outside the temple but we couldn't get into the grounds :(
So we broke the sabbath and got açaí instead.
DAY 11:
Beach Day! We went to Porto das Galinhas.
The boys buried Jared.
And made him into a beautiful mermaid.
Merman!
We also went snorkeling. It fuh-reeked me out.
Pete's hair dried weird. This is at a rodizio pizza place. It's where they bring different types of pizza around to all the tables and you can get a piece if you want. They had wonderful dessert pizzas.
DAY 12:
Goodbye Everson and Everson's mom. You guys were excellent hosts.
We flew to salvador and didn't know what to expect.
Jared modeling the chair at our hotel.
Austin not wanting to be outdone.
After checking in we wanted to see some sights. We walked around the Pelorinho which is the historic center of the city. This church of São Fransisco had 800 kilos of gold inlay.
There are lots of catholic churches everywhere. (including our hotel)
This is the hotel we stayed in. It used to be a convent. The church is still functional.
DAY 13:
We explored down by the marina. This is an elevator used to get between the upper city (where we were staying) and the lower city. We visited a market and saw lots of cool art and stuff.
Salvador used to be a very rich city. There were lots of really cool old buildings. Lots of them were abandoned.
We wanted to see into a room in our hotel/convent.
It was some sort of chapel.
Jared had the runs and we were pretty tired so we spent a lot of time just hanging out in our awesome hotel. This is us having some yummy dinner at the hotel restaurant.
Spaghetti
Roast duck
and pork
DAY 14:
We walked to this lighthouse from our hotel... which might have been a mistake.
Salvador can be quite sketchy.
Anyway, here we are taking a break.
Austin makes that lighthouse look good.
... and Pete too
Jared was still feeling a little sick. He took another break while the rest of us explored the rocks on the beach.
There was a museum in the lighthouse. This is a old lens.
The views from the lighthouse were very pretty.
After the lighthouse we had some delicious food. See the octopus tentacles?
After lunch we explored the rocks a little more, took a nap on the beach and took a cab back to the hotel.
If you look close you can se about a dozen sea urchins hiding in the cracks and shadows.
Our hotel had a hot tub and it had a lot of bubbles.
Austin admiring Jared's strength.
On a previous night we sat in the tub and watched Nacho Libre. We felt it was appropriate since we were in a convent.
DAY 15:
Flight from Salvador to São Paulo.
Some handsome guys...
DAY 16:
We basically got addicted to Guaraná. It's a Brazilian soda.
Also in Brazil there are a lot of different flavors of Tang.
I think Jared got them all
More açaí. mmmmmm it's so good
This is the family we stayed with in São Paulo.
Pedro is another old mission companion of Austin's.
Apparently we were too tired to take many pictures in São Paulo. We saw the municipal market and a few other things. Such a fun trip.
